Fri, 07 Oct 2011 19:30:00 GMT Commencing 8 January 2012 at 10 pm the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc starts for the first time ever in the Grand Massif. The village of Les Carroz will be set out as a Northern "Arctic" village with teepees and husky dogs. La Grande Odyssée Savoie-Mont-Blanc is the most important stage race in the world and is intended for mushers experienced in long and middle-distance, who can line up 14 dogs at the start of the race. 25 mushers from around the world from a dozen different countries, pit themselves against each other for two weeks of racing over more than 900km from the Grand Massif to the Espace Diamant, the Haute Maurienne Vanoise and Megève. None of the resorts are open yet in the Grand Massif but I'm hearing reports that the snow base is building well with 30 cm of snow at 1600 m and above in Les Carroz and Flaine having in excess of 100 cm at 2300 m.
